Horned melon

Horned melon, spikey melon, abincin kaza fruit, whatever you call it, this fruit is great!

Sometimes people think it is only food for sick people, but as the saying goes:

“Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food”

We can all eat this healthy nutritions fruit as part of a balanced diet to prevent sickness.

    

It often grows hidden away behind rocks, climbing trees for support, so you might have to hunt for it in your garden. You’ll see the dying vines now as dry season is starting, take a look and you may get a pleasant surprise!

  

Horned melon has ferocious spikes so use a knife to cut the top off each spike so you can handle it more easily.

 

You can cut it in half and just eat it straight for a refreshing snack in the hot sun. Or, you can mix it with other fruits to make a fruit salad, or even with vegetables like in the recipe below.

 

It’s delicious, highly nutritious and very easy to grow. Just plant some of the seeds and next year will have your own vine. Or, if you want to dry the seeds, soak them in water for a few days until the jelly coating on them ferments off and you can remove the seeds and dry them in the sun for keeping.

 

 

Salad recipe

1 horned melon/spikey melon/abincin kaza fruit

2 carrots, chopped

1 cucumber, chopped

1 onion, chopped

Scoop the flesh and seeds out of the horned melon/spikey melon/abincin kaza fruit and mix it with all the chopped vegetables. Add salt and pepper to taste.
