Its July and I’m loving these new fruit I’ve found in our garden! I’ve identified them as Brazilian cherries, using my wonderful book, Tropical Food Gardens, by Leonie Norrington.
The fruit, like all cherries I know, have a large stone in the middle, but also lots of fruit on them. They are not very sweet but apparently are packed with Vitamin C so the author freezes them and feeds them one a day to her children!
I made a chutney with them, it was so delicious, here’s the recipe:
2 cups of seeded cherries
1/6th cup of sugar
1/2 cup of white vinegar
a dash of cinnamon
a pinch of salt
Cover with water and stew the ingredients in a saucepan over a low heat until the mixture has thickened. Serve on bread or meats – it tastes like cranberry sauce!
